One way to teach this is the first time two players bunch up, stop play. Then ask them if they realize the defender can mark both of them because they are so close!

In each of these exercises, variations or gimmicks can be added to focus on any specific problems your team may have. Don’t be afraid to experiment with the drill changes. It will help to improve play and should prove to be fun.

You’ll find your kids will love “Go for goal.” Most of the exercises in this chapter can be modified to allow the players to “go for goal.” For example, if your team is playing keepaway, yell, “Go for goal!” every few minutes. The team in possession of the ball has ten seconds in which to score a goal. Use only one goal. The defending team must quickly “mark up” (guard) a man and try to stop the offensive team from scoring.

Finally, try this for real fun: “Close your eyes.” Using the drills mentioned above—keepaway, for example—yell for the player to close his eyes when he receives a ball. Now ask him to tell you where two of his teammates (possible receivers) are located. If he can’t tell you where they are, it means that he didn’t take mental pictures of their locations before he received the ball. Remind him that the passer must know what he is going to do with the ball before he receives it. Some players will be able to tell you not only where players are but also who they are.
